From Salzburg: Bus #150 to Bad Ischl (~1 hour, frequent)

From Bad Ischl: Regional train to Hallstatt station (~30-40 min)

From Hallstatt Station: Short ferry boat across the lake to village center (~10 min, €3-5 round-trip)

Bone House (Beinhaus) & Parish Church

Visit the unique Beinhaus (charnel house) with its collection of painted skulls—a fascinating local tradition. The adjacent Catholic Parish Church offers beautiful views over the lake

Enjoy fresh fish from the lake (like trout) or traditional Austrian dishes at one of the waterfront restaurants. Try apple strudel for dessert!

Optional: Salt Mine Tour

Optional: Visit the world's oldest salt mine (Salzwelten Hallstatt) via funicular. The underground tour includes fun slides, an underground lake, and fascinating history of salt mining dating back 7,000 years. Allow 2-3 hours extra. Book tickets in advance.

For stunning panoramic views, hike up to the Skywalk viewpoint platform (about 15-20 min uphill from the village). Best photos of Hallstatt and the lake from above

Important Tips

Arrive early! Hallstatt gets extremely crowded midday (especially 11 AM-3 PM)

• The village is tiny—you can walk end-to-end in 10 minutes

• Ferry times are coordinated with train arrivals—check schedules in advance

• Salt mine tickets should be booked online ahead of time in summer

• Wear comfortable shoes—the village has cobblestones and some uphill walking
